Through the study of geography, children can make sense of their surroundings and the wider world, developing both their environmental and social awareness.
Geography is the study of places, the human and physical processes which shape them, and the people who live in them. Skills developed through the study of geography help pupils to gain a greater understanding of the ways of life and cultures of other people and places.
As part of geography, we aim to:
- stimulate the children’s interest in their surroundings and foster a sense of wonder about the world.
- increase children’s knowledge and awareness of the world.
- inspire a sense of responsibility for the environments and people of the world we live in.
- develop children’s competence in specific geographical skills, including enquiry, problem solving and decision making.
We visit many local surroundings, landmarks and places of interest to support our geography topics and the children’s understanding of the world around them.
We understand that children need to develop an awareness and understanding of other places and cultures in our world. We welcome parents as a fantastic resource for teaching and learning about the wider world.
Link School in France
We have established links with Brixton, Vietnam, France and Spain, as well as many personal links with children who have moved abroad. Through communication via emails, letters, Skype and blogging, the children are able to develop an awareness and understanding of other places and cultures in our world.
