Playtimes and Lunchtimes at our schools

Playtimes and Lunchtimes at our schools

“EVERY CHILD HAS A RIGHT TO PLAY”

At our schools, we believe that playtimes should be an enjoyable, successful time for all children. We have playtime daily mid morning and again after lunch. Our playground and grounds have been organised into a variety of zones. Each zone offers activities to stimulate, engage and enjoy.

The Zones include:

  • Skipping
  • Running/active
  • Art
  • Quiet Areas and Reading – Dragonflies
  • Huff and Puff (skill based play-plate spinning, hockey, stilts)
  • Music Garden.

We continually look to improve play areas for the children and these areas are constantly evolving to meet the needs and requests of the children.

The Wingfield children enjoy investigating the bug hotel, watching play from the camouflage den that they have made and exploring the mud kitchen.

We encourage children to embark on outside play in all weathers and therefore ask that during extreme temperatures, children have the appropriate outdoor items.

In hot weather

  • Sun hats for playtime and lunchtimes
  • Named water bottle
  • Sun protection cream – named

In cold, damp, wet weather

  • Wellies or old trainers
  • Waterproof clothing
  • Warm coat

If the children have these, this will enable them to access all areas of the school grounds, including the field.

Quiet Play – Dragonflies

We have a designated indoor area called Dragonflies which is led by our PSAs and staffed by members of Our Team. This allows for quiet activities and games to be undertaken for children when they require some quiet time or time away from active games.

The Playpod

Our Playpods (we have one on each site) are a purpose-built play facility full of scrap materials, known as loose parts, such as cardboard tubes, tyres, lengths of material, netting, rope and much, much more.

At lunchtimes, children are free to go into the Pod and take out anything they would like to play with. The children are hugely imaginative and so the scrap is transformed into all kinds of different things to become part of their play. The Playpods are restocked on a regular basis by arrangement with the local Children’s Scrapstore.

Snacks and Milk

Free milk is available for children under 5 and you can also purchase milk for all other year groups. Please click here to be redirected to the Cool Milk website. Fruit is provided free of charge for all of KS2 and KS1 children at morning break under the Government’s “Take 5” Fruit and Vegetable initiative. Children may bring a small snack of fruit or vegetables to eat during mid-morning playtime or as part of snack time in their class. We reinforce healthy snack eating by encouraging children to not bring anything in a packet (except of course raisins!)

Children as Leaders

Children can also choose to have responsibilities throughout playtime and lunchtime. These responsibilities require the child to complete a specific job to help other children. There are a variety of roles to choose and we encourage all children to be leaders at some point in their primary school years.
